Is this just a fancy apron?
No. A standard garden apron hangs from your neck and has shallow pockets — it's designed for tools, not harvest weight. The Allotment Carrier is a structured carrying system with a 9kg deep front pouch, a cross-back harness (not a neck loop), and a drop-chute release mechanism at the base. It replaces your trug, not your apron.
I'm a larger size — will it fit?
Yes. The straps are fully adjustable and comfortable up to chest size 52 inches. The front pouch is unstructured and accommodates all body types. If you're unsure, try it for 30 days — our free return policy covers fit as well as function.
I have a bad back. Is this actually better?
It is, but we'd encourage you to check with your physio if you have a specific diagnosis. The cross-back harness distributes load across your upper back and core rather than hanging it from your neck. Many customers with existing back issues say it allows them to keep gardening when they couldn't otherwise. What we can say with certainty: it does not load the cervical spine the way a neck-loop bag does.
How much can it hold?
The rated capacity is 9kg. In practice, that's a full Sunday allotment harvest — courgettes, beetroot, tomatoes, beans, and whatever else is ready. Most customers fill it once and head in. The pouch depth is 34cm and the opening is wide enough for large marrows and squash.
The toggle clip — is it easy to operate?
It's designed to operate with one hand, under full load. Hold the trug beneath with one hand, pull the toggle with the other, everything drops. Most people find it easier with weight in the carrier because the load keeps the bottom panel taut. The clip is rated to 5,000+ cycles.
How do I clean it?
Easiest method: wipe the interior lining with a damp cloth after each session. For a deeper clean, machine wash at 30°C, gentle cycle, air dry — do not tumble dry. Canvas, lining, and hardware all survive a machine wash. Colour holds well.
Does it work in wet conditions?
Yes. The outer shell has a DWR water-repellent finish — light rain and mud bead off rather than soaking in. The interior lining is a full moisture barrier. The hardware is stainless and corrosion-resistant. We designed it to be used in British weather, not in spite of it.
